BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Man, winter hit like a frozen witch's t--

Stupid saying, but oh. so. true!

We went from summer like conditions to this...
Looks odd with the sunflower trying to get into this wintry picture! Poor sweet peas finally froze! That full moon sure changed this place for the BAD!

The above photo shows how windy it was and it was still snowing too...

So the presence of "Orbs" was nice to see...but where are the others? The other motes?
Notice the difference in shapes and densities...

This is what rain, snow or dust motes looks like...

There are two different orbital shapes near the bottom of the above photo that might be "Orbs" too. They do show differences in densities.

The above shot was taken when the snow/rain first started and all of my other ones where just as bad for catching the rain/snow motes. So it was strange seeing the few orbs when there should have been many?

Anyways....

Tuesday was "Gaming Day" around here! Video type that is!

Not me...can't stand playing them but my kids/grand kids are hooked!

All "gaming" people knew that a new game was hitting the stores yesterday and many had lost sleep [my kids....a 33 & 29 yr old] over it...;{?

And yes we went out in that cold blustery day to buy their copies. Actually, they were "limited" additions and "collector's" items...so I was told...;)

My son said he would have gone even if visibility was next to nil...?

And yes, they were the first ones to get their's...;)

I went along cause I needed cat food and more Halloween treats [mine seem to disappearing]?

Needless to say...it was a quiet day other wise.

I worked!

PoD had worked on her day off, just to cover this event. She was also lucky that her hubby was home to see to the kids...;)

I just shake my head.

Kind of like they do about my decorating obsession...;}

Anyways...

Here's some cute carvings...not done by me [I don't do "real" pumpkins]

ONLY 4 MORE DAYS.....OOOOOOO

I'M BAAAAAACK!

Maybe...?

Who knows for sure....

Good start.....hmmm

What have I been up to you ask?

BEEN BUSY TRYING TO WORK FOR A LIVING...taking one step forward and five back! Kind of like dancing with myself...;{

I haven't felt much like boring myself by re-reading my all woes, let alone bore the world with them! This year will go down as the all time worse for me yet...financially and health wise. Not really complaing because I know things can and do get worse if I do. So I am taking it one day at a time!

One reason I am writing is that this was to be my 4th year writing this blog and today is it's anniversary! Better trying again than not! Besides I miss venting my frustrations to the world....

So once again I will start anew...

As most all know from media headlines that this year, Saskatchewan's summer, is now known as "Saskatchewan's Summer That Never Was"!

Being one that lived through it...it was true!

Women's fancy shoes nearly came to this...

Happily it never got that bad...;}

But what was happening was this.....

day after day after day after day....

get the picture!

Until one day tragedy struck by the way of horrendously high winds...

the "Death of Creep Hollow"

I had covered him with an umbrella to help protect him from these elements but it was my undoing too. The wind was strong enough to lift him up and slam him onto his face. My son and I were able to get him turned over but decided to keep him flat on the ground. Sadly this got him soaking wet as my garage and surrounding area got flooded too!

This is resting grounds for now...someday I will resurect him [minus the arms] and he will be good as new if not better!

As for the rest of the rains.... it made things grow all over!

Grass and weeds just loved it...so did the mosquitoes!

They became bigger...

Everything grew except my beets, which I had planted out front because of all of the sunlight there and I could keep an eye on them?

I had grown spinach and char there last year and they grew great! I  loved the look so I decided to grow beets which are one of my fav veggies along with peas. The peas were grown along the side of the garage and they did really well there.

The only thing bad about the peas was the fact that I have become allergic to them fresh picked? If I pick them and eat them on the spot without washing them, my mouth/tongue and throat would become numb and swell up? If I washed them...they were okay? I don't use any chemicals or sprays so that wasn't it. I had noticed this happening before with snow peas, so I must be allergic to the chlorophyll from them? If that's possible? Grandkids got them so I guess not alls lost

Did spend many days before the rains re-doing my sidewalks in hopes to make my place look nicer and not so dumpy. They turned out okay but became over ran with different types of weeds that made walking on them dangerous!

The town is having it's 100th anniversary next year and are encouraging all to spruce up their places so I did manage to get the front painted in between the rains!

Barely!

I had planned on finishing the garage door but the weather never cooperated and now it's getting too cold!

I still have to put the awning back on just as soon as I recover it.

I had planted my sunflowers and sweet peas too late and they didn't get to bloom much...birdies will have to do with out my sunflowers to eat. I did get one small sunflower [no seed] and 3 sweet peas

As I said business did pick up a bit. Most of it is designing which either brings in work or as things turn out...not much.

What I did get was TENNIS ELBOW....which baffles me cause I don't play it!

Yah...I know it's caused by rapid finger movement which causes the tendon to hurt. Thank you to computers! This movement is unavoidable if you want to operate one! So now it has to stay wrapped which hurts either way....wah, wah, wah

Don't forget the baby toe I tried to kill off 3 months ago! Reports are in that the stub toe turned out to be cracked and now the crack won't grow together...one now has to worry about infection getting into the bone? Still waiting on that one....wah, wah, wah

Lots more to report but that's it for now.....

Also like to thank BJ and Jeanie/Marvin for showing concern over my abscence along with my bro/sis-in-law's constant reminder to stay in touch here...

So stay tuned...I do have some interesting weirdness to tell too and one goal is to do this daily....once again

SKIES ARE A LOT BRIGHTER...

Well for at least a little while...work has slowly started

All of the old sayings held true for long weekends...especially this weekend...

"Wait 5 minutes and the weather will change"

It did!

Many times!

We went from "oh my god it's SO FRIGGIN' HOT OUT HERE... and if you smile at me one more time, cause you like it, I'm gonna hit yah", type of weather

to..."what the hell it's cold/rainy enough to turn the heat back on...

to it's SNOWING!

?...that leaves only June and July that I haven't seen it snow....

I'm so happy that I wasn't away camping like most of the fools people from here were...;)!

AND the town was SO QUIET!!!!

The town kids like this weekend to do some "partying at the lake" so I enjoyed that part of this labor day weekend!

My plans were to plant sweat peas in the front under the awning and sunflowers along the side of the garage.

Maybe kill some ants along the way...

Sounds easy...it wasn't...as usual!

Both had to be prepped...

Under the awning I had made a walkway [2009]out of re-cycled bricks salvaged from the pile left in the back yard. The old woman that previously owned the place had placed these old bricks along the length of the garage and fence at the other side. So I had made the pattern the same...only it was too narrow and hadn't quite finished it.

The plan was to remove the bricks from the side of the garage and use them to expand the walkway...

Last weekend I got my grand kids to do that heavy stuff like breaking up the soil and removing the bricks...;)

But I did all the rest...

Which sounds easy...but WASN'T!

I liked the look so much better but wasn't quite satisfied...

Another thing that annoyed me was how narrow the walk was up to the door. The crumbling concrete slope is unfix able due to the pine tree next door [the soil is too acidic and eats away at the concrete] and is a hazard so maybe some added width on the other side?

Not to mention cutting back on the weed growing area...;}

Did I mention the rotten weather?

The 2 day torrential rain did help soften up the weed bed and I was able to sink the bricks into the muck...did I mention I love playing in the mud...;}

I must have been great entertainment  for the neighbors across the street...this chubby old lady putting something on the ground then jumping on it or trying to balance on one leg...;}

Did I mention it was raining...

The snow did finally drive me inside!

And the sun did finally shine...

For, I was able to do this later...

Did manage to tucker out with only 2 more feet to go.

DIDN'T manage to get the seeds into the ground yet.....ran out of steam!

Did I mention ants?

The ants have started marching in one by one lately...

I think I live on an ant hill!

THEY! ARE! EVERYWHERE!

One of the reasons on the walkways are to stir up the colony the lives around my front entrance. I've put out bait traps but they give me no visual satisfaction. But BillyRoo found these little beauties that causes me great joy....

WARNING ANTS WERE HARMED IN MAKING THIS PHOTO!

Can't express enough my joy in seeing that!

Sorry you bug lovers...but this way is more humane on the birds who might catch the ones that carry the poison bait back to the hill...so see I'm still thinking on some ways to not harm birds.

So I managed to do some labor on labor day

Got a sore back

No seeds in the ground.....

Maybe next weekend....

Oh...I managed to get some garage sale items too...

Hope you enjoyed your time off.....;)

IS IT DONE YET....?

I continue with the....MLC whining...

I am a very happy person that I have computer savvy children...my "Gurus"!

Remember my email issues...couldn't reply or send any new messages!

PoD's my "Email Guru"!

It does irritate me, that all they [the kids] do, is come in and ABRACADABRA....all better!

But it's an irritation I can live with...:)!

I can now do all those things as the business is very dependent on it!

She also had an answer on the typing problem...got to learn the keep my hands/wrists up OFF the front of the laptop's built in mouse pad sensor area?

Problem is...it still does it even when I am careful and don't have my hands/wrists near it?

All was going so well...

THEN THE LAPTOP STALLED.....BLACK SCREEN!!!!!

PICTURE PULLING OUT HAIR!

I tried everything....unplugging, button pushing....zero! nadda! crapola!

S.O.S. to PoD...

ABRACADABRA.....[unplug/remove battery/wait/put back in]

A BIG THANK YOU TO BOTH MY GURU'S!!!

PoD must have called BillyRoo [no answer] because he called late that night and his first comment was when I told him what had happened since he had left was..."I've only been gone ONE day and you've already broke it?"...;}

Was a nice ending to an already stressful day which started out rotten with an upset [overeating...I wonder why] stomach/diarrhea morning and what is either a cold [coughing] or snow mold allergy [plugged sinuses]?

That was yesterday!

Today has started with a skiff of SNOW with a temp of  +2 and it's overcast. Hopefully that's all the snow that we do get, as I am really getting tired of whining....;}

no I'm not....:}

AM I SAFE?
What took a bite out of the snow mound out front...?

Was out yesterday afternoon taking a pic of the foggy weather thats been happening lately.

It wasn't until I was viewing my shots this morning that I noticed the "bite" mark?

It's not exactly a parking spot area!

So I went out this morning to check it out...

Multi tries?

Who's trying to drive up or back-up...?

Pretty steep incline to want to drive up on, most who have tried bottom out or scrape bumper...

Street is too wide to need to have to back up on that steep incline...

Not a busy one either...

Is Creepy Hollow in trouble?
Is he too going to take a "walk about"?

I had intended one day to make those mounds into snowmen, if the weather had ever cooperated. But I then thought later that they would have only attracted unwanted attention from my WONDERFUL neighbors...

I must be psychic...

Here's the start to making my world turn green...

 IN THE FROSTY AIR...

My ivy has come back [from the wedding] and is slowly creeping out of its bag to find it's place...

Just in time for the leprechans to come and bring me their pot of gold...;}

CAME IN LIKE A LAMB...

Thats how the weather was this morning at 4 ish...

Although it had to stagger through the frost/fog to get here...;}
It is now a balmy -1 Celcius with a wind chill of -8...

Came across some literature that would have explained this folklore better than missing that day in school when the teacher explained ...

"Does that apply for here in Canada?"

So, does that mean it's at opposite sides if it came in like a lamb?

All I know is that I'm sure not looking forward to seeing that lion....

Just might have to look up tonight to see for myself...

#501.....

Weather Report......this morning

MORE FOG/FROST!

All the Orbites?..................or reality.........

Creepy Hollow......

Creepier than ever!

He also needs a new coat...

So the general forecast looks....

Have enjoyed the daylight hours too...they've been very warm, kind of melt y like.

Yesterday I saw a fool kid walk to the fast mart and back with NO coat on!

So I went for a stroll downtown...

You have a happy day....;}

WIPE OUT #2...

"Did it rain last night?"...

That should have been my first thought when I stepped out my front door this morn [4:30] to take some cool pictures [I keep trying] of the beautiful frosty looking world around me...

Instead the... "cool hoar frost" turned to "#X!?#&X@?&"......in that many words!

Yep, WIPE OUT!!!!!!!!

Good thing I got LOTS of padding on butt & hips...it cushioned the impact! It was the sudden STOP that jolted the old back and shoulders!

NO.....I didn't immediately look around to see who was watching, what other fool besides me would be up at that damn hour!

And NO, I didn't take any pictures either......."F......the cool looking hoar frost!"

GRRRRRRR......

I'd been so careful after my first episode!

Did almost do a repeat performance the other day [which might have amused my audience] while trying to escape my boring business. That time there were lots of "flailing arms" to save me.

No, "flailing" this time...happened too fast!

Now as I sit....the pain begins!

I'd been in such a great mood! Now all I want to do is bite someone's head off..............mine if I could!

This idiot had placed a mental order to "salt" that same area yesterday.....only "lazy" got in the way!

Wasn't worried about customers, most don't do a personal visit on Fridays, they usually just call and also there haven't been many lately.... so I got lazy!

Serves me right....should have listened to that inner voice!

Good thing.......it was me INSTEAD of some customer!

We've been going through some foggy frosty stuff these past few days and this winter world has been pretty to look at. Only, one should remember that there is danger lurking under all that "prettiness" too!

Today is supposed to be a shopping day for birthday presents [3 birthdays] and BillyRoo was lending me his car......but now, me not so sure I want to venture out on the highway right now. Was pretty foggy all day yesterday?

Have heard a farmer say once, that fog meant we would get rain 90 days later? May showers?

So....all you farmers out there [in my area that is] "quit crabbing about the lack of moisture"....it's foggy right now!

As for other damn fools up at that hour.....

The drunk parade started at 6:10...

Where was MY entertainment!

Damn drunks walk better than I do!

IT'S GROUNDHOG DAY...

I'd like to say Happy Groundhog's Day...

BUT

Wiarton Willie from Ontario saw his shadow so it's going to be another 6 weeks of winter!

BUT that's in Ontario...

I don't live there...

I live 2 provinces away!

It's overcast here right now...

No chance of seeing a shadow being cast here...

So where's our groundhog?

I'm pretty sure all the gophers [we don't have groundhogs living here] are still hibernating as we are still in a deep freeze with snow in the fields...

So spring should be just around our corner...

RIGHT....?

ALIEN LIGHTS...?

Naaaa...just some cool looking Hoar Frost on my LED light bush

Even the Alien Brothers got a light frosting...

Last evening we got "the awful white stuff" dumped on us big time! We went from near "no snow" to "let's shovel again" in a matter of hours....

I know it doesn't look like much out front but there was lots to shovel! My front area is fairly sheltered by the neighbors big pine tree so I was able to open the door with no problem, it was the open areas that were deep!

It was a good work out! Heart passed another stress test!

It was just disheartening to see the snow..

But then what did I expect....

Spring?

Last night was also a night of power-glitching....off and on! This made TV viewing annoying! Couldn't use the computer....WAH, WAH, WAH...

So I fell asleep listening to the wind and the frosting stuff hit the house...

Morning brought the shoveling cause I needed to go out...

Needed to pick up the bare essential from the fast mart here, so venture out I did...

Loved my son's front wheeled drive normally but could have used the driving force behind me, as I tried to drive through the HUGE snow drifts! I tried 4 intersections before I could navigate up one street! I could have walk to the place but the wind chill that came with the snow took my breath away so walking was out of the question. 5 minute trip took 20 minutes!

By the time I got back I was drenched in sweat!

I didn't get stuck anywhere...pretty near though!

Was ready for a nap...

Is is Spring yet...

Where's that damn ground hog...?

BITCHIN'...?

Got nothing to say...

One can always talk about the weather...

Or Decorating...;)

After what seemed like weeks or months [only felt like it] of bitchin' cold weather and happily little snow, the shop looked liked this...

Then we get this warmth...

Which is nice...except for the ice!

Got to watch for the dangerous puddles...

The urge to get out and go walking has been really strong lately...only the thought of wiping out keeps me yard bound!

Did sit out in the warm sunlight enjoying the fresh air, watching the traffic slush by...

Got lots of waves and smiles...

As they watched the changes being done to the new theme...

Fricken' SPRING FEVER!

I WISH IT REALLY WAS HERE...

Sadly we all know winter ain't done with us yet...

Or we could talk about how well I feel right now...

WHINE ALERT...

Must report my first cold of the year..............SIGH....;(

Pretty sure it's a cold?

The sinus problem really never got better since having the swine flu!

Doctors won't prescribe antibiotics because it's viral and nothing can cure that? Too bad I don't drink...

Your safe...won't go into the running face problem.

Good and bad thing...can't smell anything!

Good, cause some smells caused intense sinus headaches...

Bad, cause I. CAN'T. SMELL. ANYTHING!

Alzheimer's makes me forget I put food in the oven...can't eat crispy [burned beyond all recognition] critters

Everything tastes the same...the only difference is whether its sweet, sour or spicy!

You can now call me "Mouth Breather"!

When I talk it's all nasally...because the membranes are all swollen from all of the blowing

Have to say "what" [can you repeat that]....a lot

Blah, blah, blah...

Been up since 2:30 am...

It's now 5:30 ish...foggy outside [inside too]

Tired of watching the party people [yah it's Thurday...doesn't all drinking start then] going back and forth [no new drunks]...

 Cat wants her treat...

You have a nice day!

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

This is what my place looked like when our first snow storm hit Oct 8.

I had planned on putting my inflateable cat up on the roof of my garage, so it could look down on anyone walking, by but the fantastic winds that were happening that week made me change my mind. He now sits in a less windy area and so I can keep an eye on him. The first time that I inflated him out front, the material got caught on the mechanism inside that moves the head from side to side. I was even happier that it happen while on the ground so I could remove it before it got torn.

The grave stones that stand in the open area managed to stay put in that fantastic wind and as of now I still haven't had any vandalism done to my place...yet!

I had hoped to get my tree "Creepy Hollow" into the Court House before winter landed but the museum board has put the Halloween/Paranormal room on hold? The supernatural has a hard time in Dodge as it has lots of religious people who don't believe in it or of Halloween and I guess the committee doesn't feel that it has a part of history in this town. How about their "Holy Ghost"?

Someday I vow that I will see that change!

As for our first snow storm, it started out quite nice. The snow fell lightly to the ground as I walked up to the hospital for some blood testing. It was so pretty as the snow drifted lightly to the ground. It hardly covered the ground when I entered the hospital but by the time I got out it had put a blanket of it everywhere and my shoes weren't the kind for walking in it.

The town has been busy filling all of the craters left from our flooding rainstorm and most of the puddles were gone. Somehow I managed to find one little left and it was just like a skating rink so down I went!

Right on my right knee! I sliced it open and it made quite a mess...even tore a hole my pants!

I was already part of the way home so I limped the rest of the way cursing how clumsy and wondering how I managed last year not to fall once!

So now I am afraid to walk again!

So much for getting that exercise...

I did go out and buy some decent winter walking boots...

Maybe that will help?

TORNADO WARNING...

Yesterdays weather matched my mood and even felt a bit satisfying while scary at the same time!

The morning started out fairly muggy as we have had nothing but rain since the last weekend, which I had been griping about how dry it had been. Then by afternoon was changed to a tornado watch!

PoD had finished up her work here and went home.

The first lightning show started around 4:00 or so and became quite a sight to behold...

We had the green sky and terrific wind to add to its drama. BillyRoo and I watched all of its excitement while thunder shook the house....

It was SCARY and exciting all wrapped together!

PoD had emptied my rain gauge earlier, so it was very surprising to see it FULL [40mm] around a hour later! That's how fast and hard the rain came down!

We watched the clouds swirl and were both amazed to see how fast and low they were traveling! We had bets on the huge tree across the street not surviving this storm, as half of it was dead and should have been cut down.

As it turned out we had nothing to worry about... its still standing!

The other exciting part was watching the torrents of water coming down the street!

The photo below shows BillyRoo's car and the roadway which by then was completely covered! The dark stripe is the dirt and gravel being washed from the neighbor's driveway across the street from where ever it was coming from.

We live near the bottom of the hill [PoD lives near the top] and get a lot of the water run-off going by the place. Happily our place kind of sits on a hill so there was no worry of flooding from the run-off but others at the end of the street weren't so lucky...
The poor guy at the corner [white garage] was busy trying to use his truck tires to divert the river away from his house but found it futile as it was coming down the hill to his place too fast to be directed elsewhere. You can see by the photo that the streets are full! You can't see the curb at his place! It didn't help him much that people kept driving by and making large wakes of water as they motored through it.

BillyRoo just had to go join the thrill seeker too and I was able to get a shot of the driveway with the gravel run-off.

I had to use two cameras as one [BillyRoos] kept focusing on the rain drops making the shots dark and blurry looking. My camera caught all of the "Orbs" dancing in the rain...;)

The storm decided to let up for a bit so PoD & Trebor called and we decided to check out the rest of the town to see how things faired...
Everywhere we had pot holes the water had added to the damage!

The top of the hill was clean with surprisingly hardly any tree damage. But as you drove downward you could see the pavement heaved all over the place! Big chunks of concrete pavement had washed up all over and was laying in the middle of the roads!

We have pipeline workers living in trailer courts around town and they had LOTS of water and muck to contend with. We saw many a resident busy digging trenches worried that the rain wasn't going to stop. We saw lots of low-lying spots full of water and who knows how their gardens faired? We never planted one so we were smiling!

We even drove out to the reservior to see how the run-off faired there and was amazed at the massive amount of water in the fields surrounding it! I know the rain did some major damage to crops!

This was NOT the kind of rain the farmers were asking for! I think some of them had been praying for rain too hard!

Finishing our tour, PoD dropped BillyRoo & me back home only to be met by a cop vehicle parked across the street from my next door neighbors? He was there for a good 10 minutes before another cop car parked behind PoD's car!

What the hell?

The one across the street got out and went to my neighbor place but was stopped by the barking of the mean dog [remember previous story about that dog] and he stopped dead. Mean while the other cop got out of his vehicle and they both stood at the gate keeping their distance from the dog as they yelled for the guy to come out! Which he finally did. The cop patted him down and put him into his vehicle and drove away...

What that was all about....who knows?

They did drop him off 3 hours later?

So that was our exciting evening...

Getting up this morning [4:30] to the sound of wind rattling the window and thought...here we go again...but NOT

It's just windy right now...which I'd rather have than HOT & MUGGY!

My rain gauge registered another 20 mm since the last emptying so the total is now 60mm in less than a 24 hour period!

I did take another shot of the pavement near my place...

MORE CRAP ON MY CRACKER...

If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all!
I feel like this poor cat....

Once again I have gone through more nightmare situations than I'd like to handle!

It all started with the water heater crapping out at the place where I now live! Thankfully I don't own the place, so I wasn't hit with that cost, but I still had to endure living without HOT water! Luckily it got fixed [after three days of waiting for the plumber dude to get his act together]! You can breathe a sigh of relief...I can now shower!

Then the water heater at my work place decided to quit working!
Had to call the "ex" in and even he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it? It was only 3 years old? So I had to heat water in the microwave before I was able to wash alum sign blanks, dishes...etc. One thing I couldn't do, was being able to afford to replace it! So I had nothing else to do but live with it...after all third world countries learn do without!

A few days earlier, I had turned off the furnace because it was starting to be really nice outside, trying to save money? The birds were singing, the trees had buds forming on them, the air was even becoming unbreathable [people were preparing their lawns]...spring had finally sprung! I was even going to start walking in the evening!

Suddenly the weather takes a turn for the worse and a cold front hits us! With the colder weather the heat had to be turned back on! Guess what?

NO HEAT! [Yes....I paid the bills!]

This meant trying to operate machinery that isn't meant to be operated in cold weather but seeing as it wasn't too bad out, we managed anyways. Work just had to be done, heat or no heat!
We were managing...

Then the weather decided to crap on all of us AGAIN...bring back winter in it's worst form! Wham...2' of wet snow! Like everyone else I was just getting to enjoy walking outside without BOOTS and heavy coats on! I should have known better!

Well the temperature inside dropped from barely manageable to totally unmanageable! I even dragged [through HUGE snow banks] a portable heat from my residence, in order that I MIGHT be able to get some designing work done on the computer? NOPE...computers don't like the cold! Picture me sitting there with mitts, toque, boots and heavy coat on! The heater couldn't even keep me warm! My "ex" had promised to drop by when he could get out of his place to see what was wrong with the furnace. So I had to wait there until he arrived...which wasn't until 1:00pm. Meanwhile I managed to keep warm by moving around doing grad decorations!

After an hour of dorking around with the furnace he decided to check the electrical outlet...NO POWER was getting to it! It seems he forgot, that he had shut off the electricity from the power box, when he was checking out the wiring that we are doing upstairs in the renovations.
Why the power was being routed from the upstairs box is beyond my comprehension? I had checked the box downstairs and all had been okay! I never ever though that it would have been connected to upstairs! Another curse for the previous owner!

So this morning I now have HEAT and HOT WATER!
On top of everything here at work, my grand kids are down sick again with colds/coughs thus PoD can't come to work and my cat, Suki, isn't doing too good right now. I have had to decide between paying bills, feeding them and me or take her to the expensive vet! Sadly she has to pay the price. She was starting to enjoy the green grass I was bringing her from outside and it was helping with her tummy ailments...now it's frozen!

I'm trying hard to look on the bright side of things only...it's just that I can't seem to find it?

[Deep sigh]!

Well I'd better put the nose to the old grindstone and get some work caught up...

I just hope that the old grindstone keeps working?

GROUNDHOG DAY...EXPLAINED!

The Scientific Way...
season
As the Earth orbits the sun it follows two motions. One is the spinning motion around the Earth's own axis. This motion causes the days and nights. The other motion along the elliptical orbit takes a year to complete one full rotation around the sun. Seasons are caused by the Earth's axis being inclined at about 23-1/2o with the orbital plane. As the Earth orbits the sun its axis always points to the same direction.

In December the North Pole is leaning away from the sun and the Northern hemisphere receives less sunlight. The days are short and the sun is low in the sky so the sunlight is spread thinly over the Earth's surface. The sun is lowest in the sky on December 22, the winter solstice. The Northern Hemisphere receives so less sunlight that the Earth continues to get colder for another month. Thus January is colder than December. And the coldest time comes about the end of January. Things just get reverse as we move down to the southern hemisphere across the Equator.

Thus seasons are defined by this gradual shifting movement between the summer solstice and winter solstice. As we move on from winter to summer, or, the other way round, we come across four seasons, distinct especially in the temperate zones. Moving from the winter, in spring it gets warmer, in summer, hot. In autumn it gets cooler, in winter cold. Spring comes earlier down in southern areas than farther in the north. This is just the reverse in the southern hemisphere.

Shadows:
As light emitting from a source gets hit by an opaque object a shadow is created away from the source and on the other side of the object.

Shadows under the sun are created when the sunrays get hit by any opaque object - living or not. As the sun moves on from east to west shadows are created. Thus shadows are the longest when the sun is in the east or, west horizon. At around noon when the sun is perched just overhead, the shadows get reduced to a minimal length.
The movement of shadow in sync with the sun could be applied in making a sundial, the earliest form of clock known to give a near perfect reading.

This shadow movement also changes with the change of season. In winter as the North Pole leans away from the sun light falls a bit slantingly on the objects in the North.
Thus shadows are always a little longer throughout the winter days as against those during the summer. The variation in this shadow movement also helps us to predict the shifting of the seasons.

Now is it really possible to predict if spring is near or far?

Well, on February the sunlight is already bound for summer as the North Pole comes nearer the sun. The length of shadow is thus somewhat shorter, but not remarkably enough. So it is difficult to distinguish between a late January and a late February shadow unless you are a keen regular observer.

Did you understand that?

I definitely missed that science day in school!

Others like to depend on the groundhog and whether he sees his shadow or not. This year he didn't so it's supposed to means that spring is just around the corner? I just hope it means the corner on my street! The way that the "deep freeze" is going here I can't see it being any time soon!

This is the way I learned about it in school...

Kind of cutesy huh....

The way that weather predictions go around here it's more like...
Not sure I care for the tone of this picture...this is for my darker fans!
